+++wake up marie+++ was written in homage to American journalist Marie Colvin, murdered by Syrian state whilst doing her job as a journalist. In February 2012 Marie was covering the siege in Homs, a city in Syria caught up in the civil war between Bashar al-Assad's government forces assisted by Hezbollah versus initially the opposition which became the Syrian Free Army. Many other factions became involved such as Liwaa al-Umma, al Nusra Front and the then named ISIL - Daesh as we know them now.
On 22 February 2012, Marie Colvin and French photographer Rémi Ochlik were killed when a rocket hit their safe house. The day before her death Marie Colvin, had spoken to CNN and others of the "absolutely sickening", indiscriminate attacks on civilians as the government pursued its objectives. Another photographer, Paul Conroy, and French journalist Edith Bouvier (Le Figaro) were also injured during the attack. Nicolas Sarkozy described the killing as assassination. It is believed possible the journalists were targeted.
