If you haven't heard of this band - well you should have... “The Brooklyn-based collective Flaming Fire is more like an evangelical church congregation than like a conventional rock group, with its leader, Patrick Hambrecht, in the role of preacher and the other members (including his wife, Kate) as his loyal followers. The group’s songs pair deceptively simple Residents-like riffs and occasional bursts of noise with fearsome, Biblical-sounding group chants and call-and-response singing. Most refreshing are Hambrecht’s seriousness and fervor. (The band’s sense of irony is limited to the darker variety -- 'Kill the Right People,' one refrain goes.)” |

In March 2001, after a performance of her surreal and absurd poetry, Miss Roberts joined with Guy Avern and Cos Chapman (Savage Earthworm Collective) and together formed the band. The performances are very theatrical and include such things as lessons in toe sucking, the mythology of Derek: the man who lives in the loft, and instructions on DIY flying. |

Early vocal contributions from the notorious gob$au$age's Mark and Susie led to dirty versions of Vagrant that can be heard on the album. Andro Ortiz added percussion to the early 'Wood line up and drums on several tracks on 'Blessed'. Singer/songwriter Marianne Hyatt added a melodic entity to the 'Wood between July 06 and March 08, much of which can be heard on the debut double album. |

From the live jam intro of ‘Possibly …self-inflicted’ to the heavily re-worked final track ‘Fatal Exception’ this record refuses to be pinned down instead taking the listener through a space generating soundscape. Ex Gratia Recordings is the brainchild of Emma and Paul Blackwood AKA Punkvert. It's a family business done for the love of music in the tradition of doing it for yrself. It also keeps us out of trouble. Clem NZ Blackwood has also joined the Ex Gratia Family bringing a business acumen of making sure he doesn't get caught with the hem of his dress round his neck...
The label was started in 2008 to release the debut LP by Prank Rock band – Anarchistwood, of whom the couple are members of. An accompanying 7" single by Rude Mechanicals was also released at the same time. Rather share glory than covet it.
Ex Gratia has been influenced by the predominantly punk record labels of the 70's such as Alternative Tentacles, SST, Crass Records etc. (though with a wider music policy) and sells its releases through gigs, the internet and a small selection of independent record shops across the UK. Newest project is the Specialisation is for Insects compilations series next one coming out digitally Summer 2009, which will feature, The Cursors, HRT, Le Chaos Factory and more more more. We are a non-exclusive label. We are not part of the world of signing the souls of musicians or their work.
With a maverick approach, Ex Gratia publishes music under Creative Commons license 3.0. This agreement basically means that anyone can play, copy and distribute the work freely, as long as they credit the author, it is not for commercial purposes and no derivatives are made. Ex Gratia is not currently registered with the Performing Rights Society or any other royalties collecting body, though this may change in the future. We see airplay on commercial stations as a breach of the publishing licence and therefore send out information with all promotional material for commercial bodies to contact Ex Gratia direct. Please note this licence is also only for the recording that is published on the release. Artists keep the copyright of their work.
